Hey!

Speaker:

Welcome to the very first episode of

Progressions:

Success in the Music Industry.

Progressions:

I figured the only way to start this

Progressions:

journey off would be to introduce myself and

Progressions:

summarize why I decided to start a podcast

Progressions:

in the first place.

Progressions:

My name is Travis Ference.

Progressions:

And over the last 15 years, I've built a

Progressions:

career as a mixer, producer and recording

Progressions:

engineer in Los Angeles.

Progressions:

I've worked with a range of artists from

Progressions:

big to small that span across all genres.

Progressions:

I've been involved with projects that have

Progressions:

charted and I've been awarded platinum records.

Progressions:

And on the flip side, I've made records that

Progressions:

were probably never heard outside of the

Progressions:

artist's social circle.

Progressions:

In that time, I've learned a lot.

Progressions:

Obviously a lot about how to make a record

Progressions:

and how to navigate the music industry, but there

Progressions:

are plenty of podcasts and YouTube channels

Progressions:

and masterclasses that have that cover already.

Progressions:

Something that there is not a lot of talk

Progressions:

about in this industry is setting goals and

Progressions:

how to define what success is to you.

Progressions:

These are things that I've learned along

Progressions:

the way as well, particularly in the

Progressions:

last several years.

Progressions:

When I step back and look at the music industry

Progressions:

around me, I see a lot of obstacles in the way that

Progressions:

people live their lives.

Progressions:

I can see it because I've lived a lot

Progressions:

of them myself.

Progressions:

For example, when you're chasing a passion,

Progressions:

there's a tendency to believe that you

Progressions:

have to sacrifice everything and to live

Progressions:

the artist struggle.

Progressions:

I remember moving to Los Angeles.

Progressions:

I was proud to sleep on the floor of my apartment

Progressions:

because it didn't have a bed made me feel like I

Progressions:

was really going for it.

Progressions:

Even though I could afford a bed.

Progressions:

Think of the songwriter, who's working two

Progressions:

non-music jobs to pay their bills and doing

Progressions:

shows at open mikes for tips or the producer

Progressions:

who's making beats and selling them for 20

Progressions:

bucks because they want to be cheaper than the

Progressions:

next guy or the engineer doing mixes for free

Progressions:

for every band they can find in hopes that

Progressions:

they'll get hired back.

Progressions:

When the band blows up, these are all familiar

Progressions:

stories and we've all been there or are

Progressions:

there and no others in the same boats.

Progressions:

And we know that they don't all

Progressions:

have happy endings.

Progressions:

Especially, if you don't have a goal and

Progressions:

a vision, then there's something about the

Progressions:

arts that also compels people to put a lot of

Progressions:

focus on peer approval.

Progressions:

For some reason, they have to judge

Progressions:

their success by the success or failure

Progressions:

of those around them.

Progressions:

I spent years of my life hoping every record I

Progressions:

did was as successful as the last record, one

Progressions:

of my peers did, and that they might notice.

Progressions:

It doesn't matter how fulfilling the experience

Progressions:

of making the record was.

Progressions:

Or how great the friendships you made with

Progressions:

the people involved were.

Progressions:

It all comes down to, was it better

Progressions:

than something else?

Progressions:

So combine the artist struggle with this quest

Progressions:

for pure approval, and you have a recipe for

Progressions:

the scarcity mindset.

Progressions:

The idea that every gig is the last gig

Progressions:

you'll ever book.

Progressions:

And the more gigs you do, the more chances

Progressions:

of having a hit.

Progressions:

And if you have a hit, then it will be better

Progressions:

than everybody else.

Progressions:

So on and so forth.

Progressions:

And you've got yourself a cycle that probably ends

Progressions:

in some form of burnout.

Progressions:

At this point, you're probably thinking

Progressions:

this sounds kind of like a bitter rant

Progressions:

and you feel like I'm probably hitting things

Progressions:

that seem unrelated.

Progressions:

And you're thinking, man, I don't even

Progressions:

know if I want to keep listening to this, but

Progressions:

bear with me just for another couple minutes.

Progressions:

I think that if you set out on a quest to

Progressions:

chase your dream without defining what your goals

Progressions:

are and by doing so what success is for you.

Progressions:

Then you will run a much higher risk of looking

Progressions:

back one day and seeing that you ran the rat race

Progressions:

and sure it was exciting, but you actually achieved

Progressions:

very little and at worst ended up on fulfilled.

Progressions:

And I'm not saying the things I mentioned

Progressions:

earlier, won't give you success and happiness.

Progressions:

The artist struggle is probably the most

Progressions:

exciting part of starting your journey

Progressions:

and can lead to piles of inspiration and striving

Progressions:

to create the best work you can possibly

Progressions:

create is definitely not a bad thing either,

Progressions:

but don't do it just to spite the success

Progressions:

of those around you.

Progressions:

And you love what you do.

Progressions:

So taking a lot of gigs is not wrong, but one

Progressions:

day learn that saying yes to everything is

Progressions:

going to leave you saying no to something else.

Progressions:

So after all that still no answer.

Progressions:

Why is this guy starting a podcast?

Progressions:

Why is he still talking?

Progressions:

Why am I still listening?

Progressions:

I thought a podcast would be a great way

Progressions:

to share the stories of people that have lived

Progressions:

through and are still living through the many

Progressions:

parts of the music career journey that you are

Progressions:

most likely on yourself.

Progressions:

I'll be bringing guests on from all areas of

Progressions:

the industry, producers, engineers, musicians,

Progressions:

managers, and various other creatives.

Progressions:

I want there to be a story for everyone.

Progressions:

I don't want this just to be another

Progressions:

interview show though.

Progressions:

I want to put a twist on things.

Progressions:

My goal is to highlight a specific career milestone

Progressions:

or a particularly successful career,

Progressions:

and try to break down the steps and turning

Progressions:

points in that person's life that led them

Progressions:

to achieve that goal.

Progressions:

I'm a big proponent of setting goals and then

Progressions:

working backwards to break down the steps

Progressions:

that need to happen to get you there.

Progressions:

When I say breaking things down to steps,

Progressions:

I mean, breaking them down to clear,

Progressions:

actionable steps.

Progressions:

It's way easier to get up in the morning and take

Progressions:

a small predetermined step on your journey

Progressions:

than it is to get up in the morning and

Progressions:

quote, get a global number one smash hit.

Progressions:

Although you can wake up in the morning one

Progressions:

day and have a global number one smash hit.

Progressions:

A lot of people in this industry put their faith

Progressions:

in luck and they search for inspiration from

Progressions:

things like the muse.

Progressions:

I don't believe the people who have thriving

Progressions:

careers and fulfilling lives in music can

Progressions:

look back and attribute it all to luck.

Progressions:

Sure.

Progressions:

People can catch a break, but you need to be

Progressions:

prepared for that moment.

Progressions:

At some point in their career, successful people

Progressions:

committed themselves to a goal and they took

Progressions:

steps to achieve it.

Progressions:

That's what I want to focus on in this show.

Progressions:

I want to bring to light the steps that people

Progressions:

have taken to lead them to their successes.

Progressions:

And for one final twist, I'd like to put my guests

Progressions:

on the spot and ask them what their current goal

Progressions:

is and what's their next smallest step look like.

Progressions:

So I'm excited for this new adventure.

Progressions:

Hopefully you are as well.

Progressions:

Hopefully you're still listening.

Progressions:

Hopefully somebody is still listening.

Progressions:

I will be learning to interview people on

Progressions:

the fly, so you'll have to give me a little

Progressions:

bit of room for air, but I'll try my best,

Progressions:

but I do promise to bring you guests with

Progressions:

stories that will help you make breakthroughs

Progressions:

in your career.

Progressions:

I'll also be highlighting concepts and ideas in my

Progressions:

pre-interview openings that I hope you'll find

Progressions:

inspiring and helpful and will make you a

Progressions:

more productive and a more creative person.

Progressions:

Things that I think go hand in hand, making

Progressions:

records will always be my passion, obviously.

Progressions:

Helping an artist get their creative vision

Progressions:

out into the world and seeing the impact that

Progressions:

it can have on the lives of the people.

Progressions:

It reaches has got to be one of the

Progressions:

most satisfying experiences that one

Progressions:

can have at least in terms of career life.

Progressions:

I see the show as an extension of that as

Progressions:

an opportunity to help not only artists reach

Progressions:

their goals and define their vision, but also

Progressions:

to help other people in the industry with theirs.

Progressions:

If you've enjoyed what I'll call our

Progressions:

introductory rant.

Progressions:

And you're all curious about how, or if this

Progressions:

might help you accomplish your goals, or even

Progressions:

maybe just inspire you to start something,

Progressions:

please subscribe to this podcast and keep a

Progressions:

lookout for new episodes.

Progressions:

My goal is to release episodes

Progressions:

on a weekly basis.

Progressions:

If you feel like, you know, someone who

Progressions:

could get value out of this show, please

Progressions:

do share it with them.

Progressions:

A little word of mouth will go a long way

Progressions:

for us while we're just getting started.

Progressions:

So thanks for listening and I look forward

Progressions:

to going on this ride with you all, and I'll
